Frequently Asked Questions

Q: [Do you have fleece available?]
A: [Please see the fleece page for available fleeces and reservation requirements.]

Q: [Do you process your own wool?]
A: [Any processed wool I sell, whether roving (Finn) or combed top (Romeldale/CVM, is done by Zeilinger's Wool in Frankenmuth, MI]

Q: [How much wool do I need to buy to spin for a sweater?]
A: [It depends on what size sweater you are planning to spin for.  It also depends on whether you are wanting Finn or CVM/Romeldale fleece, raw or processed wool.  Please see questions below regarding yield on fiber from the specific fleeces.  Rule of thumb is between 2 and 2.5 lbs. of washed or processed (roving or combed top) fiber for a sweater, then add 10% more, just in case.]

Q: [How much clean wool do I get from each pound of raw fleece from the CVM/Romeldale?]
A: [The clean fleece yield for the CVM/Romdeldale is approximately 65% of the grease weight. An average adult CVM/Romeldale fleece weighs between 6-12 lbs.in the grease.]

Q: [How much clean wool do I get from each pound of raw fleece from the Finnsheep?]
A: [The clean fleece yield for the Finnsheep is approximately 70% of the grease weight. An average weight of Finnsheep fleece depends on how often the sheep is shorn.  I shear twice a year and my adults average around 2 lbs. of fleece in the grease and the staple length is around 3".  Flocks that are shorn only once a year can weigh 5-6 lbs. with a staple length of 6".]
